In Memory of Ruby

If you need more affection, get a dog!  This is what my ex-husband said to me when we were married.  It was the best advice I’ve ever had.

My sweet Ruby has been my faithful companion for the past 11 years and I will miss her more than anything in the world!  Ruby was a rescue dog that I found at Family Dogs New Life.  She was shy, malnourished, had already had a litter of pups and had been beaten all by the time she was a year old.  When I first met her at the shelter and took her for a walk, I knew she was the one for me!  She soon learned that she was loved, safe, warm, dry and fed well and she became the best thing I could have ever hoped for.

Ruby in her younger years loved to chase squirrels, cats and anything that would run from her!  She loved the beach, hikes, swimming, chasing sticks and playing keep-away.  She had her favorite toys that she’d chew on and sleep with and had smiles that warmed my heart like nothing else.

Ruby had a way of communicating with me through her soft nudges on my leg, the sweet noises that she’d make sounding like a happy seal, the wag of her tail and the sparkle in her eyes. She didn’t have to talk…. I always understood.  When I was unhappy she knew it and would come sit with me, with her head on my leg.  When she hurt, I also knew it and would sooth her with a body rub, kisses and more love than a person could imagine.

Good bye sweet Ruby….. leave your old sore body and run like a pup again, chase the squirrels, seagulls in the surf and be a happy young dog again.  Know that mom loves you, misses you and will think of you every day!
